A Family Run Home Renovations Business

Matt was just a country boy, growing up on family land outside Hickory, North Carolina. Everyday he spent time learning from his furniture making grandfather and general contractor dad. He spent summers building houses with his dad and worked regularly on the land with his grandfather. His family built their home and his mom always had a weekend project for them to tackle. While growing up, his family traveled the country and Matt soaked up the way buildings and cities were made. Even though he was born and raised in the industry, Matt never thought he’d become a builder himself. So he set out for college in 2003 in pursuit of a Business degree.

Sarah grew up outside of Brevard, North Carolina, a magical mountain town filled with waterfalls, music and artists. She spent most days working with her family on their own fixer-upper, studying music and cooking in the kitchen. From an early age, she saw how a good meal or a beautiful environment made people feel. She was constantly creating - something artistic, something delicious or something beautiful. Her dad taught her to lay tile floors by age 10 and was given her first “design” job at 13 complete with a timeline and a budget. Sarah traveled throughout Europe during High School and loved the culture and the architecture. So much so, she made plans to pursue her degree in International Business and travel as often as possible.

Little did Matt and Sarah know they were living on different sides of the state and would soon meet and fall in love. They started dating in 2005 and got married in 2008. They bought their first home in 2009, a builder-grade fixer upper, that they slowly began to transform. Matt had a career as an Audio Engineer, building set designs and creating one-of-a-kind musical experiences. Sarah worked as a Marketing Director alongside groups of talented designers.

A few years later, they started a family. It was during this time that they began doing more remodels for friends and even flipped their first house, both while working full time jobs and raising two kids.

That’s when Matt and Sarah felt something wake up for them - like this is what they were made to do. With Matt working as the contractor, using all his years of experience before, and Sarah as the designer, incorporating all the necessities for how to make a house feel like a home, they stepped away from their jobs and began Sain Homes.

Since then, they’ve renovated hundreds of rooms for some of the world’s best clients. Matt brings his creativity and quality craftsmanship, and Sarah brings her design expertise to make homes pretty and practical. Their passion is to turn fixers into forever homes. They’ve been featured in Forbes, Architectural Digest, Domino Magazine and Apartment Therapy. Both Matt and Sarah are active members of the SC & Greenville Home Builders Association and Sarah serves on the board of the Professional Women in Building.

They run their business like they do their family, taking care on each project as if it was their own home. Their two sons (Garrick & Wyatt) love to give their design opinions to Mom (like “why can’t we do sparkle siding? That would be SO pretty!”) and “help” dad by using his tools. They are currently renovating their own fixer upper just outside of Travelers Rest, SC. You can see more of their own home and their current projects on Instagram.

Clients of Sain Homes become like family, and Matt and Sarah take pride in maintaining that relationship with clear communication and beautiful results. Check out more about their design/build process or see some recent projects completed by the Sain Homes team.
